London’s Smart Mobility Living Lab is the place to go for real-world connected automated vehicle (CAV) and connected automated mobility (CAM) testing, allowing businesses to look at an entire connected environment and get their technology or solution market-ready, faster.

SMLL goes beyond the normal scope of vehicle testing. We can help you explore the whole service model –the components, the cars, the roads they drive on, the infrastructure supporting them and the way a service is delivered. We can even study the environmental impact and help devise audit and monitoring systems.

SMLL is designed for use by all kinds of organisations, from the public and private sector, individually or in partnerships or consortia. We aim to meet every customer’s needs, however large or small. It’s a truly comprehensive CAV testbed environment, with facilities and features to support every kind of research and trial relating to future urban mobility solutions.

Working with SMLL, you’ll have access to state-of-the-art facilities, so you don’t have to build your own. The London SMLL testbed means you can research, test, trial and investigate early concepts or run full-scale commercial pilot trials.

For detailed examples of the types of tests we can conduct, please request a call with one of our Test Engineering team via the Contact form.

R&D SUPPORT

Whatever stage you’re at in your product or service development, SMLL can support your journey. We provide pre-trial advice on what to test, how to test, which KPIs to monitor and how to collect the right data.

SMLL can then help your trial run smoothly in practice, from recruiting public participants to network and infrastructure integration. Post-trial, SMLL data scientists and behavioural psychologists can help interpret the results.

RISK MANAGEMENT

TRL leads the way in CAV and CAM solution road safety research. We have contributed to UK Government and TfL guidance on automated vehicles and developed safety cases for a range of automated vehicle trials.

For SMLL customers, we provide consultancy and support for every aspect of risk management and help develop safety case documentation for trials and approvals.

trials management

From the initial planning through to trial delivery and data collection, our experienced team can help you ensure your testing is effective and produces the insights you need to move your CAV, infrastructure or technology development project forward. Trials take place in the real-world SMLL testbed or using its digital twin to gather initial data.

decision support

Ultimately, CAV and future mobility trials and research contribute to key business, investment and policy decisions that will change the urban transport landscape. TRL experts have worked through the research and evidence-gathering process many times. With our support, you can be sure you’ve looked at every impact and understood the true costs and value of your product, service or policy.

USE CASES

The future of transport is no longer just about vehicles, infrastructure and people/packages. Many industries now intersect with and are taking advantage of new opportunities from connectivity, changes in demand patterns, and decarbonisation plans. We are exploring varied uses of the testbed with a whole host of innovators from retail, energy, communications and other sectors. Trials

You may well see one of SMLL’s branded automated vehicles driving around areas of London. You can rest assured that it’s being monitored and directed by our team of experts.

All connected and automated vehicles must undergo rigorous testing and trialling before they’re proven to be safe and can be brought into general use.

Testing vehicles, technology and systems in the SMLL environment allows operators to see how the they behave in an authentic environment and to observe how the public and other traffic may react to them or affect their operation.

It’s a controlled experience that’s as close as possible to real world operation – a step before launching into the public domain.

PRIVATE TRIALS

Our commercial and private customers need SMLL for private trials to test their technology, systems or services before bringing them to market or to secure further investment. The results and conclusions from these tests may be confidential and commercially sensitive.

PUBLIC TRIALS

Public sector trials at SMLL help shape the overall future of mobility for urban communities. Our public sector customers often involve local residents and stakeholders in giving feedback and interacting with new systems and technologies, to help them understand consumer attitudes and observe how new transport methods may be adopted and used.

ethics board

SMLL exists to trial solutions. These trials, when they involve the public, must include and be guided by a robust ethical framework.

That’s what our Ethics Board is for. It oversees every trial that takes place in the SMLL, setting criteria to help assess the ethical implications. Safety, security and privacy for participants are some of the key considerations. The Ethics Board makes sure that trials are properly designed to be safe and to achieve their aims.

CAV TRIALS EXPERIENCE

The safety experts at TRL have been involved in many of the ground-braking automated vehicle trials part funded by the UK government in recent years. This is what gives us our unique experience and insight to support similar organisations.
